Later on, Alan bought Cheecho’s and re-opened it as Brazil. He called it Brazil because he had gone there and he loved it so much. Then we did shows there all the time, and we would also meet down there to go to the city.

Three or four people would get there at seven o'clock, at eight o'clock there would be four or five more. Other people would come in and we would still be waitin for somebody that was too busy, couldn’t decide what they were gonna wear, so they wouldn’t show up until nine o'clock. So we were in there drinking from seven o'clock till nine o'clock. Then when the last person came, we would all run into the city to some big disco for two or three hours.

We’d be in the city and whoever got bored would say, “You know what, I’m goin back to Brazil. I'll meet you there later.”

Then we would come back at three o'clock in the mornin, and spend an hour back there with Alan and our friends for the last hour that the bar was open, buy another two or three drinks and then go home.

People would call up and say, “Alan, who’s there?”

Alan would say, “Oh, Norman’s here and Freddie’s here and Frankie’s here, and Lana’s here and her cousin Jeff is here.”

“Oh, okay, then I’m comin down.”

Or they’d say, “Oh let me talk to somebody.” ... and then to somebody, “What are yous doin later on?”

“Oh, we’re probably gonna meet and go to a movie. So come down now, have a couple of drinks and we’ll come back after the movies.”

When we were in there we were spendin money. Alan didn’t cover charge. You came and went as you pleased and people were comin and goin, so he always made money.

Unfortunately, Alan had a very bad alcohol problem, and owning a bar you drink like crazy. Many a night I would go down there at eight or nine o'clock at night and I’d walk in and someone would be behind the bar giving away drinks. I’d say, “Where is Alan?”

“Oh, he’s passed out over on the sofa.”

I’d go, “Alan! Alan!” And I’d try to get him up. And I couldn’t get him up.

Back at the bar, ... “All right, get the fuck from behind the bar. Alan told me to take over. Don't worry, I'll take care of the bar.”

I would take care of the bar and I would close the bar and then put a blanket on Alan, get the keys out of his pocket and lock up for him.

In the mornin I’d go down there, “Alan, you can’t do this shit, they’re givin away liquor. It's like a big party. You can’t do it.”

But you couldn’t tell him.

Or he’d go out with somebody and leave somebody tendin bar. He’d go out to dinner for three hours, come back with half a load on, go into the register, pull out a hundred dollars, go into the city and spend the night in the city drinkin, come back and drink more, bring people back with him, drink for nothin.
