Later on, Alan bought Cheechoâs and re-opened it as Brazil. He called it Brazil because he had gone there and he loved it so much. Then we did shows there all the time, and we would also meet down there to go to the city.
Three or four people would get there at seven o'clock, at eight o'clock there would be four or five more. Other people would come in and we would still be waitin for somebody that was too busy, couldnât decide what they were gonna wear, so they wouldnât show up until nine o'clock. So we were in there drinking from seven o'clock till nine o'clock. Then when the last person came, we would all run into the city to some big disco for two or three hours.
Weâd be in the city and whoever got bored would say, âYou know what, Iâm goin back to Brazil. I'll meet you there later.â
Then we would come back at three o'clock in the mornin, and spend an hour back there with Alan and our friends for the last hour that the bar was open, buy another two or three drinks and then go home.
People would call up and say, âAlan, whoâs there?â
Alan would say, âOh, Normanâs here and Freddieâs here and Frankieâs here, and Lanaâs here and her cousin Jeff is here.â
âOh, okay, then Iâm comin down.â
Or theyâd say, âOh let me talk to somebody.â ... and then to somebody, âWhat are yous doin later on?â
âOh, weâre probably gonna meet and go to a movie. So come down now, have a couple of drinks and weâll come back after the movies.â
When we were in there we were spendin money. Alan didnât cover charge. You came and went as you pleased and people were comin and goin, so he always made money.
Unfortunately, Alan had a very bad alcohol problem, and owning a bar you drink like crazy. Many a night I would go down there at eight or nine o'clock at night and Iâd walk in and someone would be behind the bar giving away drinks. Iâd say, âWhere is Alan?â
âOh, heâs passed out over on the sofa.â
Iâd go, âAlan! Alan!â And Iâd try to get him up. And I couldnât get him up.
Back at the bar, ... âAll right, get the fuck from behind the bar. Alan told me to take over. Don't worry, I'll take care of the bar.â
I would take care of the bar and I would close the bar and then put a blanket on Alan, get the keys out of his pocket and lock up for him.
In the mornin Iâd go down there, âAlan, you canât do this shit, theyâre givin away liquor. It's like a big party. You canât do it.â
But you couldnât tell him.
Or heâd go out with somebody and leave somebody tendin bar. Heâd go out to dinner for three hours, come back with half a load on, go into the register, pull out a hundred dollars, go into the city and spend the night in the city drinkin, come back and drink more, bring people back with him, drink for nothin.
